He guided me down a corridor and through a door that said ’staff only’. I held back as he opened the door wider and gestured me inside.

‘But that’s for staff, I can’t go in there,’ I said, holding back and shaking my head.

‘There’s nobody around today and if anyone does come in, I’ll say I was trying to get my wicked way with you and led you in here blindfolded.’

I laughed, it felt good to hear that sound coming from my mouth.

‘They won’t believe that in a million years!’

‘Ah, you’ve rumbled me. I’m wounded.’ The twinkle was in his eye again and I followed him into the room. It was a small staff kitchen with a microwave, kettle and under counter fridge along one wall. To the side was a table and four hard back, farmhouse style chairs. He walked over to flick the kettle into life and indicated that I should take one of the seats.

‘It’s not quite as stylish as the café, but it’s nice and quiet when you don’t want to be seen by anyone,’ he said.

Doing as I was told, I headed for the chair by the wall and facing the door. I wanted to be able to see if anyone was coming and then I figured I could duck down under the table quickly so Will wouldn’t get into trouble.

‘Coffee please, milk, no sugar. I’m not a fan of tea, even fancy tea.’

‘I don’t blame you. Tea that smells of parma violets just isn’t right. Lucy used to love it though.’

‘What was she like? Sam doesn’t talk about her very much.’

Will’s eyes took on a misty glaze as he placed the mug of coffee in front of me.

‘She was funny, and sassy. She always saw the good in people and always put them first. She got me out of many a scrape, especially here.’

‘I know Sam loved her very much. More than he does me. I don’t think I measure up to her standard very well,’ I said, placing my hands around my mug.

Will came and sat opposite me, wrapping his own hands around mine.

‘Hey, don’t sell yourself so short. I’m sure you are very wrong if that’s what you think.’

‘I dunno, I can’t seem to do anything right at the moment.’ I took a sip of my drink. It was still hot and scalded the top of my mouth making me spit the offending liquid back into the mug before placing it back onto the table. ‘Christ, I can’t even drink bloody coffee properly.’

Proper fat drops of water started finding their way out of my eyes and down my cheeks again. I didn’t want to cry all over Will a second time, he’d think I was a total mess. Scrabbling around in my
